Scrapblog

As many know, I work for a great company called Scrapblog.  If you haven’t heard of it, stop what you are doing and go check it out right now!

From the site:

We created Scrapblog because we wanted to go beyond sharing our photos and videos online. We made Scrapblog drag-and-drop-easy so that everyone can tell their stories and create beautiful multimedia scrapbooks.

Our goal is to enable everyday people to express themselves online in a creative way. We’ve been developing Scrapblog for over two years. However, what you see online today is only the beginning.

I work with some extremely talented people (both developers and graphic designers), and they have built a site that is not only sexy, but easy to use.

What I love about it, is it gives you something to do with those thousands of digital pictures gathering virtual dust on your hard drive!  And photo galleries are cool for some things, but this really enables you to tell a story with your pictures.

Tidbit of the day: Android

T-Mobile To Introduce ‘G1’ Google Android Phone Sept. 23

I am watching this one because it has the potential to do for cell phones what Firefox did for web browsers.  If Google gets the open-source developer crowd behind it, the entire cell phone industry will take a turn for the better.

Here is an early comparison of the two.  It seems like the phones will lag horribly behind the iPhone for some time, but the application platform is what is interesting.

Google Chrome Review

I was one of the people who downloaded it on release day, and have been using it quite a bit.  Below are my thoughts on it…

  • Speed.  It is fast, on my system it seems like the fastest browser yet out of IE, Firefox, and Safari.
  • Interface.  I love the tab-at-the-top interface, very intuitive and easy to use.
  • Multi-threaded.  How can you not like the fact that one tab crashing won’t freeze or bring down the whole browser.  Very cool.
  • Customization.  It is too new to tell.  Obviously there are some Firefox things I immediately miss (mouse/keyboard tweaks, mouse gestures).  I use the del.icio.us plugin heavily in Firefox and IE.  It seems they are going to have a rich API for customization, but only time will tell if developers will code for it.

All in all, an outstanding browser, second only to Firefox overall in my opinion.  For now I have gone back to Firefox, but I will definitely be keeping an eye on how this progresses.

Blackberry down!

So yesterday I was worried that I forgot my parking pass (gotta love parking in Coral Gables) so I was fumbling in my bag at a stoplight on 8th street looking for it.  I was on my motorcycle (see more about this in my blog elsewhere). It was in the same pocket as my Blackberry Curve.  In the process of checking for my badge I must have dislodged it from its warm, comfy cocoon and it fell out as I took off.

I wasted like 45 minutes walking up and down the sidewalk where I lost in (within a couple blocks).  This could have been an enjoyable stroll except for the freakin’ 90% humidity and 85 degree temperature.  I finally accepted my loss and went on to work.  On the way I had a great idea … if I went back with a cell phone I could call it while walking and maybe hear my “4 minutes” ringtone and find it!  So I borrowed Caleb’s (a peer at Scrapblog) cell phone and set out.

The only part of my plan I didn’t account for was the constant stream of noisy cars, SUVs, and trucks that NEVER seemed to stop.  It was so noisy I probably couldn’t have heard a jet engine, much less a ringtone from a 1/4” speaker!  Mission status: Failure.

I tried calling it later that afternoon and someone answered it! I ended up getting it back after all, but it is busted so I am weighing my options now

The Extreme Me

Although I am a computer geek, I have a dangerous, thrill-seeking side as well. I have always been into the extreme and have done many things that many people wouldn’t consider.

  • BMX freestyle
  • motocross
  • bungee-jumping
  • skydiving
  • water-skiing
  • snow-skiing
  • surfing
  • mountain biking

are just some of the things I have done. In addition I just got my black belt in Shaolin Eagle claw kung fu last year!

I ride a motorcycle every chance I get, even to work in the crazy Miami traffic. See, I started riding dirt-bikes when I was 7 years old, and have every since. To this day, I am still more comfortable on a motorcycle than driving a car. It just feels like instinct when I get on one. I ride a Yamaha R1 for those who are interested, similar to the one posted above..
